The names ring true to rank among the greatest of International Trot champions: the American standouts, two-time winner Delmonica Hanover ‎and Classical Way; Canadian star Fresh Yankee, and the French flag-carriers Une de Mai and Roquepine, both two-time titlists.‎ What do these immortals have in common? All were mares who dominated their male counterparts in global warfare.

09.22.2015 - Ten Greatest Trotters In World Accept Invitations To $1 Million International Trot Set For Saturday Afternoon, October 10, At Yonkers Raceway ***Elite Global Affair Returns After 20-year Absence***

The world’s greatest trotters – 10 elite harness horses carrying the flags of six different countries – have accepted invitations to the prestigious $1 million International Trot, to be contested at a mile and a quarter on Saturday afternoon, October 10, at historic Yonkers Raceway, it was announced today. The field (with countries in parenthesis) in alphabetical order is as follows: BBS Sugarlight (Norway); Bee a Magician (Canada); Creatine (USA); Mosaique Face (Sweden); ‎Natural Herbie ‎(USA);‎ Oasis Bi (Italy); On Track Piraten (Sweden); Papagayo E (Norway); Rod Stewart (Italy); Timoko (France). It will mark the return of the global trotting showcase after a 20-year absence. Yonkers' famed half-mile oval last hosted the spectacle in 1995, captured by Sweden’s His Majesty. The one-million dollar purse equals the richest in Yonkers history. The first seven-figure purse was in the 2007 Art Rooney Pace, won by Southwind Lynx. The European invaders are scheduled to depart for New York’s JFK Airport from Liège Airport in eastern Belgium, close to German city of Düsseldorf, next Wednesday, September 30. The transcontinental flight is a distance of 5960 kilometers or 3,703.4 miles, and the journey travelled takes eight hours and 55 minutes. The Roosevelt International Trot was inaugurated in 1959 with great worldwide fanfare at now defunct Roosevelt Raceway in 1959. Yonkers Raceway took over as host of the International in 1989 with the demise of Roosvelt. The French import, artichoke-eating Jamin, captured the inaugural edition in ’59 before a crowd of 48,000. A record throng of 54,861 watched Hairos II of the Netherlands win the first renewal the following year. The mighty French standardbearer Ideal du Gazeau is the only three-time International champion, pulling off the “Three-peat” consecutively in 1981, ’82 and ’83, after finishing second to Classical Way in 1980. Legendary U.S.A. flag-carriers Su Mac Lad and Delmonica Hanover, and French standouts Roquepine and Un de Mai, were all two-time International champions during the sixties and seventies. Lutin d’Isigny continued the French dominance in the eighties, winning two straight following Ideal du Gazeau’s three in a row. The United States and France has dominated the International with 15 and 13 victories, respectively. Sweden is third with three, and Canada has captured a pair. The return of the International Trot has been discussed for years, gaining momentum with the successes of last season’s International Trot Preview, and French simulcasting from Yonkers, which has typically had wagering of $1 million plus for each card. Last year’s International Preview was contested at a mile-and-a-quarter, and won by Natural Herbie (Verlin Yoder) in a world-record 2:24.4. The purse distribution (same as all events) is as follows: winner-50 percent, 2nd-25 percent, 3rd-12 percent, 4th-8 percent, 5th-5 percent (non-cashing overseas entrants receive $37,500 via a purse supplement, while non-cashing North American entrants receive $10,000). The International is part of a scheduled matinee card, with first post time at 2 PM, and post time of the “main event” at approximately 3:10 PM. “It’s our pleasure to bring back the International Trot,” Raceway president Timothy J. Rooney said. “It’s been a signature New York race since it debuted at Roosevelt Raceway back in 1959. We took over the race after Roosevelt closed, and it was very well received. “With Yonkers now a major player in the overseas simulcast market, we feel this is the best time to showcase our track to the world by again inviting the best trotters in the world to race here. We have had tremendous cooperation from our horsemen, and all of us are looking forward to it.”

09.09.2015 - Giant Force: America's last International Trot winner

Over the years the International Trots were raced on American soil and featured the most outstanding older trotters in the world. Since the race was an American initiative, one would figure that the host country would have had the most winners in the event. Initially that was not the case but over the course of time the United States trotters emerged victorious 15 times, only three more than the amount of French victories. Sweden’s three International Trot wins is third best followed by Canada’s two. Denmark, Italy and the Netherlands trotters each had one win in the international event. And though they started multiple times in the International Trots, no German or Finnish horse has won the event. A Finnish horse, Seabiscuit, is currently being considered as a potential invitee for this year’s event.

08.26.2015 - Bee A Magician, Magic Tonight commit to International Trot

After two decades, the return of Yonkers Raceway’s International Trot is within sight, thus it makes perfect sense that the field of world-class participants is beginning to take shape. With just under seven weeks until the million-dollar event—Saturday afternoon, Oct. 10, to be precise—the connections of Bee a Magician and Magic Tonight have offered unqualified commitments. Bee a Magician, the triple millionairess and 2013 Harness Horse of the Year, has found herself right at home in Westchester. In four Yonkers’ starts, the 5-year-old daughter of Kadabra won three of them, setting an aged-group track record each time.

08.26.2015 - Vote for your favorite trotter to represent the USA

It’s taken two decades, but the International Trot is returning to Yonkers Raceway, with a $1 million purse. On Oct. 10, Yonkers Raceway will host the first edition of the elite event since 1995. The race will be contested over the distance of 1-1/4 miles and has drawn interest from top international trotters. Bee A Magician has been invited as a Canadian representative, but the United States still needs someone to root for! Yonkers Raceway has decided to let the fans decide which of our top trotters will be invited to take on the world representing the USA. Cast your vote here, on the United States Trotting Association homepage or on our Facebook page. Some voters will also be randomly selected to win a special, commemorative gift bag containing Yonkers Raceway, International Trot, and USTA apparel and memorabilia. Voting closes on Sept. 10.

08.13.2015 - Looking back at the early years of the International Trot

65716-1960 International Hairos IIThe framers of the inaugural International Trot in 1959 could not have been more pleased with the way it was received and that more than 48,000 fans attended the race spoke volumes alone. However, all involved were even more delighted with the race’s second edition at Roosevelt Raceway in 1960, playing to a crowd of 54,261 which was, and still is, an all-time attendance record at a night time harness racing venue.

07.27.2015 - A look back at the inaugural International Trot

The year was 1959. Interest in harness racing was at its zenith and those in the forefront felt that the sport should have international flavor. Since Europe only offered races for trotters it seemed natural that the powers behind such an international event would look across the pond to find the best trotters and bring them to race against the best that the United States and Canada had to offer. Back then the logical site of what was to be called the International Trot was Roosevelt Raceway, known in those days as the “Taj Mahal” of harness racing after a sparkling new $19 million racing facility was built and completed in 1957 with its Cloud Casino dining room. The onus of promoting the race lay upon Roosevelt Raceway’s publicity and public relations department which got a tremendous boost from a harness racing friendly media including the New York Times. The inaugural racing distance was set at 1-1/2 miles and the purse of $50,000 was huge in those days.

09.25.2014 - International Trot Preview at Yonkers Raceway a Global Attraction

Now, Sjoberg is proud to be part of the return of the International Trot Preview to Yonkers when it returns to Yonkers Raceway on Oct. 25.

07.20.2014 - IN THE ARSENAL Wins 125G Final of Lawrence B. Sheppard Pace

YONKERS, NY, Saturday, July 19, 2014—In the Arsenal (Eric Goodell) never had an anxious moment, Saturday night, winning Yonkers Raceway’s $125,000 final of Lawrence B. Sheppard Pace. The Sheppard—named for the man who helped make Hanover Shoe Farms the sport’s leading breeding operation—is the Raceway’s premier event for “open” 2-year-old colts and geldings (though none of the latter were in this season’s final). In the Arsenal, who broke his maiden with last weekend’s 1:56.2 elimination win, was in play early here from post position No. 2. He left, as did pole-sitting Rock N’ Roll World (Eric Carlson), Perfect Bet (Jeff Dauplaise) and a wide 2-5 favorite Cartoon Daddy (George Brennan). However, the first turn did not cooperate with last week’s other elim winner, as Cartoon Daddy broke. In the Arsenal found a :27.4 opening quarter-mile, then somnambulated through a 1:01 middle half (:58.3, 1:28.4). Parklane Eagle (Jordan Stratton), the 83-1 rank outside, hung around first-up, with Lone Survivor (Brian Sears) went three-deep. In the Arsenal, with the field at his feet, opened 2¾ lengths in and out of the final turn. A pocketed Rock N’ Roll World cosmetically cut the final margin down to three-quarters of a length in 1:56.4. Third went to a stubborn Parklane Eagle, with Lone Survivor and Byby Landon (Jason Bartlett) settling for the final two pay envelopes. Mystical Pacer (Brent Holland), Perfect Bet and Cartoon Daddy rounded out the order. For second choice In the Arsenal, a White Birch Farm homebred son of American Ideal trained by Kelvin Harrison, he returned $6.30 for his second (consecutive) win in three seasonal/career starts. The exacta paid $101.50, with the triple returning $983. The $62,500 payday increased his earnings to $75,000…not bad for a colt who came back to White Birch after his reserve price was not met at sale. “(In the Arsenal) dragged me out of there really good,” Goodell said. “I went faster than I wanted to go early, but he was able to relax after that. “I had no idea the other horse (Cartoon Daddy) made a break. I was just worried about mine and things worked out.” Goodell also won the $44,000 Open Handicap Pace with Dream Out Loud N ($9.70) in 1:51.4, with a :54.4 back half. This season’s edition was the richest final since 1995 (note race went on hiatus from 2004-2011, inclusive). An historical note…it was a half-century ago that the great Bret Hanover and Frank Ervin won the very first Sheppard. The purse was $57,622 and the time was 2:02.1. The Raceway's five-night-per-week live schedule continues, with first post every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:10 PM. Evening simulcasting accompanies all live programs, with afternoon simulcasting available daily. -30- (photo-Mike Lizzi-accompanies) (FFI…Frank Drucker, Yonkers Raceway Publicity Director, 914-968-4200)

07.18.2014 - Robin Cruise, Tobin Win Friday 44G Co-Features

YONKERS, NY, Friday, July 18, 2014—Yonkers Raceway’s Friday night $44,000 co-featured Open Handicaps—for distaff pacers and membership-worthy trotters--were won by a pair of down-the-roads in Robin Cruiser (Jordan Stratton, $14) and Tober (Jason Bartlett, $5.20). Robin Cruiser, leaving from post position No. 6 (in one notch after an inside defection), worked around pole-assigned Icommandmyspirit (Larry Stalbaum). She then took at it the house, with weigh stations of :27.3, :56.4, 1:24.4 and 1:52.4. Monkey on My Wheel (Brian Sears), as has been her MO, floated away for an early seat before trying it first-up. However, the 3-5 favorite couldn’t look the leader into the eyes and Robin Cruiser had a length lead into the lane. Icommandmyspirit tried “Robin” up the cones but missed a half-length, with Monkey on My Wheel, Jonsie Jones (Pat Berry) and Virgin Mary (Eric Goodell) rounding out the payees. For Robin Cruiser, a 5-year-old homebred daughter of Yankee Cruiser owned by Pinske Stable and trained by Julie Miller, it was her fourth win in 13 seasonal starts. The exacta paid $104.50, with the triple returning $356.50. The week’s marquee trot saw tepid 8-5 choice Tober, in play from post No. 4, lead at every interval (:28, :58, 1:26.1, season’s-best 1:54.2). Slight second choice Coraggioso (Sears) tried the same tactic as Monkey on My Wheel—leaving from an ordered outside post and trying it first-up. Tober fending off that one’s advances, opened up 2¼ lengths in and out of the final turn, then held off a cones-skimming The Triple Lindy (Eric Carlson) by a neck. Third went to Coraggioso, with Dewycolorintheline (Stratton) and Zooming (Goodell) settling for the remainder. For Tober, a 6-year-old statebred gelding co-owned by (co-breeder) Kristie Leigh Farm & Joseph Betro and trained by Ed Hart, he’s now 8-for-20 this season. it was his third win in 11 ’14 starts. The exacta paid $32.20, the triple returned $104 and the superfecta paid $369.50. Saturday night’s feature is the $125,000 final of the Lawrence B. Sheppard Pace for 2-year-old colts and geldings. The Raceway's five-night-per-week live schedule continues, with first post every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:10 PM. Evening simulcasting accompanies all live programs, with afternoon simulcasting available daily. -30- (photo- Mayra Escamilla-accompanies) (FFI…Frank Drucker, Yonkers Raceway Publicity Director, 914-968-4200)

07.18.2014 - Yonkers Hosts 221G NYSS Armand Palatucci Pace

7-17-14 Twin B Tenacious YONKERS, NY, Thursday, July 17, 2014—The Empire’s best 3-year-old colts and geldings—save for He’s Watching—invaded Yonkers Raceway Thursday night for the $221,000 New York Sire Stakes Armand Palatucci Pace. The odds-on gelding Twin B Tenacious (Steve Smith, $3.90) won the first ($72,800) division from second-over. Unhurried from the pole, “Tenacious” chased Twin B Speedo (Mark MacDonald) through intervals of :27.2, :58 and 1:25.4. “Speedo” swung wide and whipped the leader by a half-length in 1:54. Third went to Keystone Honor (Matt Kakaley). Smith is now 4-for-4 since picking up the drive behind Twin B Tenacious. “To be honest, I had the drive the first time (Meadowlands) when a lot of the guys were out of town,” Smith said. “He had some chicken lines (breaks) previously, and has doesn’t always relax. “I learned you have to let him settle, but when I’ve asked him, he’s finished very well. Twin B Tenacious, a son of Bettor’s Delight trained by Casie Coleman for owner West Wins Stable, is 4-for-8 this season. The exacta paid $12, with the triple returning $114. The second ($74,100) statebred event was supposed to be fairly simple work night for Art Rooney Pace winner All Bets Off (Kakaley). However, despite a perfect tow from entrymate I’m All Heart (George Brennan), the 1-5 tandem found themselves run over. Capital Account (Yannick Gingras, $35.80), third-over from post position No. 4, snapped All Bets Off by a half-length in 1:52.4. Big Boys Dreams (Jason Bartlett) was third. Fifth choice Capital Account, a Brittany Farms homebred American Ideal colt trained by Jimmy Takter, is now 4-for-11 this season. The exacta paid $76, with the triple returning $336.50. “This was his best race so far,” Gingras said. “Sometimes, he’s been known to throw in steps, but tonight, this worked out. When I saw Matt (Kakaley) working (on All Bets Off), I knew I had him beat. “The last time he was here (NYSS last month), he was locked in. If I had come first-up, he’d have won but I had to use him leaving. It was a much better trip tonight.” Thursday night’s final ($74,100) sires soiree saw Forty Five Red (Brennan, $22.60)—last season’s winner of the Lawrence B. Sheppard Pace here—make the lead right at the half and hold sway. Forty Five Red, from post No. 4, took over from Sir Jake’s Z Tam (Jordan Stratton) after that one’s :27.3 opening quarter-mile. After a :56.3 intermission, it was a 1:24.1 three-quarters and a season’s-best 1:52.3 finale, which found Forty Five Red a length better than Winds of Change (Tim Tetrick). Neat (Marcus Miller) was third, while 1-2 choice Stay Up Late (Brian Sears) was a never-in-it dead-heat for fifth. Forty Five Red, a son of If I Can Dream co-owned (as Burke Racing) by (trainer) Ron Burke and Our Horse Cents Stable, has won his last couple after beginning the season 0-for-6. The exacta paid $133, with the triple returning $379.50. “Last week (overnight here), he was all out to win and just didn’t race well,” Brennan said. “Tonight, I scored him down much harder he was a totally different horse…on the bit and alert.” Forty Five Red’s winning time Thursday was more than two seconds faster than his previous effort. After Saturday night’s $125,000 final of the Sheppard Pace (2-year-old colts/geldings), New York Sire Stakes continue Tuesday night, with the $200,200 Clyde Hirt Pace for 2-year-old fillies colts and geldings. Four, $50,050 groupings go as races 2,4,5 and 6. The Raceway's five-night-per-week live schedule continues, with first post every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:10 PM. Evening simulcasting accompanies all live programs, with afternoon simulcasting available daily. -30- (photos-Mike Lizzi-accompany) (FFI…Frank Drucker, Yonkers Raceway Publicity Director, 914-968-4200)

09.18.2012 - $1.8 Million New York Night of Champions Drawn

YONKERS NY, Tuesday, September 18, 2012--Post positions were drawn Tuesday for Saturday's $1.8 million New York of Champions. Eight, $225,000 divisional finals--for 2- and 3-year-old of both sexes and gaits--comprise the richest night of racing in the state. The races go as Nos. 2 through 9 as part of Yonkers Raceway's 13-race card, with first post at the customary 7:10 PM. The 23rd edition of the Night of Champions again has each of the races sponsored by a prominent Empire breeding farm or ownership group. Here's a quickie, hot-off-the-presses overview... 2nd race--Crawford Farms 2-Year-Old Colt & Gelding Trot--Divisional points leader Tirade Hanover drew well (Brian Sears, post 2) as he goes after a fifth consecutive victory. Company comes in the form of pylon-sitting Fashion Blizzard (Jim Morrill Jr.) and Royalty for Life (Jason Bartlett, post 5), both, like Tirade Hanover, six-figure summer earners. 3rd race--Morrisville College Equine Institute 2-Year-Old Filly Trot--Barn Babe led all lasses during the season, but needed better friends with the open draw. John Cummings Jr. joins her behind the eight-ball. They have their work cut out, what with Lady Riviera (Morrill Jr., post 1), four-wins-in-a-row You Want Me (Tim Tetrick, post 2) and Isabella Gal (Sean Bier, post 6) all in the competitive mix. 4th race--Winbak Farm 2-Year-Old Filly Pace--Summertime Lea (Morrill Jr., post 2), she of the 7-for-8 resume and more than $182,000 this far this season, is joined as a Ron Burke-trained entry with Silk Pajamas (Sears, post 8). Give Me an Amen (Tetrick, post 6) and Freetime (Andy Miller, post 7) have each won half of their eight seasonal starts. 5th race--Cameo Hills Farm 3-Year-Old Filly Pace--Defending sire stakes champ Handsoffmycookie (Tetrick, post 2) and Romantic Moment (Sears, post 6) shared the clubhouse lead in points during the summer. "Cookie" has never lost here (6-for-6) and becomes a career millionairess with a victory, while Romantic Moment enters with three consecutive wins, including the $350,000 Valley Forge down in Philly. Major Look (Miller, post 1) has seven wins and upwards of $264,000 to her credit this season. 6th race--Kenneth J Syndicate LLC 2-Year-Old Colt & Gelding Pace--Trainer Linda Toscano offers up a three-headed monster in points leader Doctor Butch (Tetrick, post 3), Swift as a Shadow (Morrill Jr., post 6) and Deny Deny Deny (Morrill Jr. also listed, post 8). "Butch" has seven wins and three seconds in 10 seasonal starts, and is the fastest (1:52 at Tioga) and richest ($210,024) member of this subsection. 7th race--Stirling Brook Farms 3-Year-Old Filly Trot--Millionairess Win Missy B (Sears, post 4) had never sniffed a small track before her last start, and all she did was obliterate the local track standard (1:54.4) for this group. Cowgirl Hall (Morrill Jr., post 3) and Fortunista (George Brennan, post 7) each have six wins on their seasonal resume, while Kristin's Victory (Steve Smith, post 1) and '11 frosh champ For a Dancer (Jeff Gregory, post 6) have also enjoyed much success. 8th race--Allerage Farm 3-Year-Old Colt & Gelding Trot--Archangel, he of Yonkers Trot, world record and all-age track-record-matching fame (1:54.1), outdrew no one here. With 10 wins and a pair of seconds ($714,236) in 14 seasonal starts (including 5-for-5 in sires), he's the obvious horse to beat despite the impost. Morrill Jr. takes his regular seat. Brookroad Knight (Gregory, post 2), Mado Dream (Brennan, post 5) and Coraggioso (Sears, post 6) all enter sharp as well. 9th race--Blue Chip Farms 3-Year-Old Colt & Gelding Pace--Defending NYSS champ Heston Blue Chip (Tetrick, post 6) is 20-for-24 lifetime, including 9-for-11 this season and 4-for-4 in sire stakes company. While he's spent time outside of the Empire, Forever Just (Gregory, post 7) tackled the Thruway and was the points leader. Major Bombay (Morrill Jr., post 1) is also entered in Thursday's Little Brown Jug, while Joe Pavia Jr. as trainer has a pair in Steelhead Hanover (Sears, post 4) and Bet on the Law (Morrill Jr. also listed, post 5). The Raceway continues its normal five-night-per-week live schedule, with first post every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:10 PM.
