YONKERS, NY – Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts (“Empire City”) announced today the suspension of racing operations at its harness track, Yonkers Raceway, through Wednesday, March 18th. Empire City learned on Tuesday, March 10th that an employee of the Standardbred Owners Association (“SOA”), the harness horsemen association, tested positive for COVID-19 before passing away. The individual had an office in the Yonkers Raceway paddock building located next to the racetrack and was last there on February 28, 2020. His death was announced Tuesday, March 10th by New Jersey officials, as he was a resident of that state.
As a precaution, racing was canceled on March 10th and employees who had direct contact with the individual were provided with information to secure testing, self-quarantine, and advised to contact their healthcare providers if they are experiencing symptoms. Professional cleaners were engaged to deep clean and sanitize the impacted areas, including the race office and paddock.
LAS VEGAS, NV – MGM Resorts International (the “Company” or “MGM Resorts”) today was informed of a case of the coronavirus (COVID-19) involving an employee of the Standardbred Owners Association (“SOA”), the harness horsemen racing association, who was based in the Yonkers Raceway race office. The Company released the following statement:
“We just learned that an employee of the Standardbred Owners Association, working in the racing office of Yonkers Raceway, located next to the racetrack and paddock, tested positive for the coronavirus before passing away. His death was announced today by New Jersey officials, as he was a resident of the state. We believe the last time he was on the property to be approximately eight days ago. We offer our condolences to his family during this difficult time. As a result of this development, the racetrack will be shut down as of this afternoon, and we have asked employees who worked in the immediate area to self-quarantine. We will continue to coordinate with and follow the guidance of health officials and support them in their response and prevention efforts.”
The Guss Hayes Band was the property’s first musical performance when Empire City Casino opened in 2006
YONKERS, NY – Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts (“Empire City”) announced its first residency with local legend Guss Hayes and the Guss Hayes Band. The six-month engagement at the Northeast entertainment destination will begin Wednesday, March 4 and continue the first Wednesday of every month through August 2020.
The Guss Hayes Band will perform two shows in the Entertainment Lounge at noon and 2 pm, and will feature the vocals of Hayes, accompanied by band members Philip Shimmel on drums, Jorgen Kjaer on keyboard, Paula Atherton on saxophone and flute, and Richard Pontrelli on guitar. The band was the property’s first group to perform when Empire City Casino opened in 2006 and has been a fan-favorite of the entertainment lineup.

YONKERS, NY – Irish charm and Irish sounds will make their way to Empire City Casino for the sixth annual Irish Concert on Sunday, March 8 at 2:00 p.m. Music fans can enjoy St. Patrick’s Day festivities early with the finest Celtic tunes performed by the exceedingly popular New York City-based Irish-American bands, Shilelagh Law and Celtic Cross. The Pipes and Drums of the Police Emerald Society of Westchester, comprised of police officers from a majority of the 39 Police Departments within Westchester County, will also perform.
